When I opened the box with the bicycle and popped open the back of the large front wheel, the first thing that popped into my brain was Alice looking down the rabbit hole. I’m not at all sure why, she wasn’t on a penny farthing bicycle, nor is it anywhere in the story. But that’s what I thought of. I tried to imagine other things to do with the bike for several weeks, but that kept coming back to me. I finally decided to make a stab at it. I googled the main characters as I didn’t want to use the Disney styled characters. I printed up what I was looking for and colored them with watercolor pencils, then adhered them to a piece of chipboard. I didn’t fussy cut the characters to severely, and decided to leave a bit of the white paper as a border

I poked around in the garage until I found a good bit of wire, not to big so it wouldn’t fit inside the wheel but big enough that it would hold it’s shape. I curled it so it resembled a spring and stuck it in the wheel to see if it would work, it seemed to be what I was thinking. Next I made a long piece of binding with dark brown felt and threaded the wire through that. I stitched the four Wonderland characters to the wire spring so that there would be a bit of space between them when the rabbit hole was extended from the bike. I stitched a piece of the felt around the spring, (took forever!) then die cut a chipboard circle and two pieces of the felt. I adhered one piece of the felt circle to the chipboard circle and stitched to the end (or bottom) of the rabbit hole. Then I stitched the second circle of felt to the outside end. It was tricky getting the felt covered spring with characters back inside the bicycle wheel!

I stamped, colored and semi fussy cut the Cheshire Cat, die cut two branches using the Tim Holtz Bird Branch die with some leftover chipboard. I inked that with gathered twigs and weathered wood. Then I made a little basket just because the bike looked like it needed one. I used some rusty screen from Scrapadabadoo, curled the edges to keep from poking my fingers, added some sponge material and ribbon for color. I die cut some grass with three different colors of green paper using the Tim Hotlz Tapered Fringe die. Then I die cut a crescent moon from chipboard with Tim Holtz Crescent Moon and Stars die. I inked that with mustard seed and spiced marmalade to give it some dimension. Now it was time to put it all together. I used some wire and attached to basket to the handlebars, glued the Cheshire Cat to one of the branches and then adhered the other branch on top of that one. I glued the branch to the top portion of the wheel.

I glued a little platform with a notch cut out on the bicycle base and then adhered Alice to that. I glued the moon to the frame of the bicycle and added some gilder’s paste German Silver to the moon as well as the branches to give them a bit more dimension and a bit of shine. I added some Alice in Wonderland trinkets and charms to the bike and the basket. I adhered the three layers of grass to the base with Scor-tape. I adhered a Tim Holtz word band with dimensional foam and added some pale blue baker’s twine around the base. This project was hard for me to start, but once I had all the pieces made, cut out and assembled, it was easy to put it all together!

Hope you enjoy my version of the Penny Farthing bicycle!
Enjoy the ride,
Kim
